Online Fire Protection Degree Leads to Dream Job for EKU’s Outstanding Intern of 2015
“From the day I started my internship, I knew it was going to be exceptional,” wrote EKU Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology major David Sample.
Sample, who is interning with the City of Solana Beach Fire Department in California as a fire prevention technician, was recently named EKU’s “Outstanding Intern of the Year.” He has the distinction of being the first online student to receive the honor.
In nominating him, Fire Marshal Anita Pupping described Sample as “an exemplary employee to be commended,” and praised him for his attention to detail and his ability to apply his education with professionalism.
Whether he is helping business owners address fire and life safety issues, reviewing plans for compliance with the state and local codes, or working with the public, Sample says he loves his role.
In an inspiring essay he wrote as part of his award application, he described what it’s like to find your calling. “I truly feel this opportunity has helped me hone my career goals . . . I have learned to pursue exactly what I want and to set goals that challenge me to go higher than I previously thought possible,” he wrote.
His rising career is proof-positive that an advanced degree was the right decision. After earning his associate’s degree, he know he wanted more than a career as a firefighter. He searched for fire protection programs nearby, but he didn’t find anything that met his needs. “When I found out that EKU had an online degree program . . . I jumped on it,” he recalls. Now that he is approaching graduation he’s certain his education has laid the foundation for the career he wants.
He summed up his thoughts in the closing paragraph of his essay, writing, “My hope is that everyone gets the chance to do what they love, and I would encourage anyone who will listen: pursue your dream job with abandon.”
